painted in Silesia, as I suggested in my article, is not so certain. I have not come across any
mention of Herdt’s visit to Silesia in the accessible sources on Silesian art and artists active in
tbe area. My conjecture in tbe article was based on the fact that the artist’s surviving drawings
come from a Silesian album, formerly in the Municipal Library in Wrocław. According to Alwin
Schultz72, the album was compiled by a Silesian collector in the first half of the 18th century,.
which, however, does not provide enough ground for believing eitber that the drawings includcd
in it have remained in Silesia sińce their origin or, the morę so, that the artist was active in the
area. Whether Herdt visitcd Silesia will rcmain a hypothesis until morę convincing evidence
has turned up.

The portrayed man is presented half-length, in a standing position, three quarters to the
spectator, against the background of a drapery, in a Western-type suit of armour, with a sasli
