Artemisia Gentileschi lies in the difference in expression. Gramatica treated the
theme of the Magdalen with noble restraint; Artemisia’s brutal realism bordering
on caricature, accompanied by violent expression of feelings, was foreign to
Gramatica. Equally important is the influence of Artemisia Gentileschi, as well
as her father, Orazio, on the Caravaggist works of Gramatica, especially since he
must have known the Roman works by the Gentileschi’s. Gramatica in particular
was able to assume Orazio Gentileschi’s subtle, soft modeling effects, the use of
various tones of white, and a variety of fabric textures.
