typographer’s work is expressed as an art which preserves human thought and
carries it into the futurę beyond death. It restores life.

Another aspect of “the black art” appears in an oval woodcut predating
1588 for Eloy Gibier, a typographer working in Orleans (ill. 6). Here a printing
press is depicted operated by a hand reaching out of cloud. The widely-known
