In 1969 A. Chudzikowski claimed the painting as the work of an anonymous
Dutch painter of the 17th century. In 1996 L. Slatkes suggested that the
possibility of Hals’ authorship should not be dismissed too hastily. In 1997
H. Bórsch-Supan suggested a South German artist.
