In 1964 A. Chudzikowski claimed the painting as the work of an anonymous
Dutch painter of the 17th century. In 1979 J. Nieuwstraten specified the
painting as a work from the School of Utrecht. In 19 8 6 J. Białostocki suggested
Pier Francesco Mola. In 1995 J. Michałkowa eliminated the possibility of the
Italian School and leaned toward the earlier opinion of Nieuwstraten. In 1996
L. Slatkes expressed doubts about the connections with the Utrecht School,
suggesting instead authorship by a painter from the circle of Pieter van Laer.
