Plate XVII.

With two exceptions all the objects shown on this plate are gold spirals whose purpose is
only partially clear. That they could have been earrings is unlikely on account of their shape
and weight. They may have been used for fastenings for the hair, or as fibulas to bind garments;
the former being more likely on account of the fact that they are usually found near the head of the
person to whom they belonged. Some of them were votive offerings. Found at Curium in a vault.

i. Spiral; oval. Length i/A inch. One and one-half turns in coil. The collection
contains 24 examples of this pattern.

2. Spiral; oval. Length % inch. Two and one-half turns in coil.

3. Spiral; oval. Length 3^ inch. Two and one-half turns in coil.

4. Spiral; oval. Length 7/$ inch. Two and one-half turns in coil.

5. Spiral; round. Diameter 3^ inch. Possibly an earring. There are forty-one exam-
ples of round spirals in the collection.

6. Spiral; round. Diameter i/A inch. Ends plain. One and one-half turns.

7. Spiral; round. Diameter yA inch. Ends plain. One and two-thirds turns in coil;
heavy wire.

8. Spiral; round. Diameter i/^ inch. Bronze, covered with gold. Ends in a rosette-
cap. Heavy wire. One and one-third turns in coil.

9. Spiral; round. Mate of No. 8.

10. Spiral; round. Same as No. 7, except that ends are plain; grooves to represent
bands at end.

11. Spiral; slightly oval. Length % inch. Two and one-half turns in coil. One end is
plain; other has lion's head. Eleven specimens of this pattern are found in the collection.

12. 13. Spirals, pair; round. Height, bottom of coil to top of head-dress, \l/2 inch.
Diameter from back to front, 1 Ms inch. One and two-thirds turns in coil. Ends in dragon's head,
