Charpentier: Uttaradhyayanasutram

240, 244, sollaya- ibd., solliya- Aup. S. § 74). It is explained by
Pischel § 244 to be = sudayciti ’he cooks’. But this is no doubt
a mistake, and Hoernle Uvas. s. v. is right in deriving solid- from
Skt. sulya- ’roasted on a spit’, sollagci- is certainly a substantive
here, and means ’a lump of roasted meat’. Tchaviyd- must be from
Tchad-, but it cannot be = Tchadita-", Tchad- sometimes has the present
form Midi (He. IV, 228) < khaai, and thence a root Mid- was
extracted, from which arose a causative Tchdvei — *Tchdjpayati; Tchdviya
is the participle of this, misamamsdim (A) certainly means ’lumps
of meat crackling (from fire = burning hot)’; mis a- belongs to
misimisanta- or °misinta- = dedipyamdna Aup. S. §§ 19. 48 and
to misimisemdna- Bhag. Ill, 1, 84 (Weber Bhag. p. 214) and misi-
misiyamana- Uvas. § 95 {kopatisayapradarsanarthah sabdah comm.);
cp. Skt. misamisayate ’to crackle’.

70. About vasd cp. Charpentier KZ. 46, 40 ff.

76a~b = 44a_b.

77. Cp. SBE. XLV, p. 97 n. 1.

80. vallara- is explained as = gahana-\ vallara- Rajan. 12, 91,
Zacharias Beitr. 67 is = vallura, which is explained as = gahana-
in Med.

82. samutthitah samyamdnusthdnam praty udyatah |

83. ene (B1) also makes good sense (cp. end-, end- ’the black
antelope’).

84. On jahd suham cp. Leumann WZKM. Ill, 347 ff.; J. J.
Meyer Hindu Tales p. 113 n. 1.

85. arnbci0 D.

89. Cp. SBE. XLV, p. 98 n. 2.

92. About vdsicandana0 cp. SBE, XLV, p. 99 n. 1. The
same compound KS. § 119; Aup. S. § 29, but the comm, do not
give any exhaustive explanation of vdsi. It certainly belongs to
vdsa- ’perfume’, vdsayati ’to perfume, fumigate’, cp. sanivdsita-
’made fetid, having an offensive smell’.

93. ajjhappa0 = adhydtma0. Cp. SBE. XLV, p. 99 n. 2.

96. Cp. IX, 62.
