reading (here and in the following verses), viz. se 11a gacchai
mandate, which seems to me to be better than se na acchai m.

10. In Sutrakrt. II, 2, 17 are enumerated the following kinds
of mada (pride), viz. : jcitimada, Jculamada, riipamada, tapomada,
srutamada, tdbhamada, disvaryamada and prajhcimada i. e. ’pride
of birth, family, beauty, penance, learning, riches, power and
knowledge’. According to a Prakrit verse quoted by D. the monk
has to observe brahmagupti, i. e. to exert himself in preserving
his chastity with regard to the following nine things, viz. vasati
’place of abode’, kathd ’conversation’, nisayyd ’bed', indriya ’ob-
ject of sense’, Tcudydntara (sense not quite clear to me), purvahrldalca
’former pleasures’, pranlta ’dainties’ (cp. Leumann Aup. S. p. 133),
atimdtrdhdra ’abundant food’ and vibhusand ’ornaments’.

12. The fifteen names of the paramddhdrmika's enumerated
in a verse quoted by D. seem to be the following: Amba, Am-
barlsa, Sydma, Sabalci, JRudra, Uparudra, Kccla, Mahakala, Asi-
pattra, Dhanu, Kumbha, Vdlutca, Vaitaram, Kharasvara and Ma-
hcighosa. With some slight deviation these names coincide with the
names of the fifteen Asuras or devils who are enumerated in the
commentary on Umasvati Tattvarthas. Ill, 5 (ZDMG. 60, 311). Most
of these names are wellknown as names of other persons or
localities connected with the hells.

16. That the gods — and not the 24 tirtliakara s — are meant
here is the opinion of the commentaries. The different kinds of
Bhavanavasin’s, Vyantara’s and Jyotiska’s are enumerated in the
comm, on Umasvati IV, 6 (ZDMG. 60, 317 sq.) and in the sutra's
IV, 11—-13. But according to IV, 18 the Vaimanika’s are not
only of one sort, but are divided into tcalpopapanna ’inhabitants
of Jcalpa's' and kalpaUta ’void of Tcalpas’. However, this does
perhaps not make any difference here.

Brhatkalpa and Vyavahara are taken together as a unity even in
