rated by Pischel at the end of § 445, where we find igaydla- ’41’,
bdydla- ’42’ &c. instead of hdydlisam &c.

23. S. mentions a various reading: saclhe ya matte ya rasa-
lolue |

25. niyadille is explained by nikrtiman; it is, of course, a
derivation from niyadi = nikrti-. The word pratikuhcaka means
svadosajjracchadaka, and dupadhika means sarvatra vydjaka accord-
ing to D.

26. There is some doubt concerning the word upphdsaga0. I

have retained this form in the text, although I am almost certain
that it is incorrect because of the explanation utprasaka in D
For utprdsa- would certainly be able to give upphdsa- in Prakrit,
although I think we have another form of the word, which is the

correct one. In the Desln. 1, 95 we find: upplieso trdsah | apa-

vdddrtho !py ayam laksyem drsyate \ yathd \ asarisajanaupphesayci
na hu sahiyavvd kule pasuena il. upphesa- consequently means ’fright-
ening, terrifying’ but also apavdda ’reviling, blaming’, and I take
this to be the Prakrit correspondent of Skt. utprdsa- (there is an-
other word upphesa- in Aup. S. meaning mukuta, which is, of

course, not related to our word). But now all my Mss. have
upphdlaga0 instead of upphdsaga0, and this may also be correct;
for He. II, 174 mentions a verb upphdlai as one of the words
current in Maharastra and Vidarbha which must be learnt from
the common usage (lokato ’vagantavydh), and in the Desin. i, 117
we find upphdlai kathayati. Consequently, this may come some-
what to the same thing, and the correct reading would probably be
either upphesaga0 or upphdlaga0.

28. S. refers to two variae leett., viz. either hiydsae (: hitd-
■iayah) or andsave (: andsravali) instead of hiesae.

32. S. refers to a varia lectio suddhajoe (: suddhayogali) in-
stead of viyardge.

33. S. mentions a varia lectio asamkhijjd (: asamkhyeydh)
instead of samkhdiyd.

51. According to Umasvati Tattvarthas. IV, 2 the third class
