Copy (original according to Bartsch), enlarged.

Of the several copies described by Bartsch and Passavant, the only one that can be
called deceptive is that (here reproduced) which Bartsch took for the original and
Passavant described as copy A. It differs from the original (state II as well as state I)
in the following particulars :—(«) The tablet containing inri has a double instead
of a triple border-line at the top. (b) The first i (right) is in the original equidistant
from the upper and lower border-lines ; in the copy it rests on the lower line, (c) The
lines of St. John’s nimbus are not, as in the original, continued across the right
shoulder of the soldier, ((f) The drawing of the toes of Christ and St. John is markedly
inferior to that of the original. The escaped line outside the circle on the right is
carefully copied.
Drawing : a small sketch for the three principal figures, now in the British Museum
(Durer Soc. ix, 22), was etched by Hollar (Parthey 106).
