Architecture.
the author of this publication, a Basle architect who made a seven months
journey through India in 1889—90, undertook on the basis of a great number
of photographs and designs collected there to bring out an exhaustive work
on the subject, which should meet every requirement, and, by giving the
representation of the most splendid monuments of Indian Architecture, to
form a work which should exceed in fidelity and precision of detail any-
thing so far accomplished and should be of universal and lasting use in the
study of Indian Architecture. So this publication might be as useful to the
practical architect as it is instructive to the Art-Historian.
The work is divided into 3 parts, the first treating the temples, timber-
constructions and industrial arts, the second dealing with mosques and se-
pulchral monuments and the last with stalactite-buildings palaces and gardens.
