Various have been the opinions respecting
the cause of Laughter ; I mean that species
arising from the contemplation of some ludi-
crous idea or object presented to the mental
or corporeal eye. Mr. Hobbes attributed it to
a supposed consciousness of superiority in the
laugher to the object laughed at. Hutcheson
seems to think that it is occasioned by a con-
trast or opposition of dignity and meanness;
