so forcibly the amiable , and justly celebrated Angelica
Kauffman , that with little variation she painted a most
pleasuig pi&ure from it, which she prefented to the author
of this work, It is to be hoped, that this publication may
furnish Painters, and Artists with many pleasmg ideas. On
this vase, as is frequent, on those that are most perfeft,
is the word, kaaos , beautiful (a). Mazzochi in a disserta-
tion on a vase formerly in the colledion of Mastrillo, and
now in the British Museum, explains the Word, kaaos ,

Plate ii.) The Centaurs children of Ixion, and of a
cloud representing Juno, after having been bred up, and
come to the age of manhood on mount Pelion, asked of
Pyrithoiis the son of Ixion and Dia, to give up to them
as Brothers a part of the Kingdom. On Ixion s refusal there
was a war between the Centaurs and Lapithce, which being
terminated, Pyrithoiis married Deidamie , and invited his
friend Theseus and the Centaurs to the wedding; the lat-
ter getting drunk, insulted the women, which was the oc-
casion of an other war famous in the sabulous History of
Greece, and very unfortunate to the Lapithee {b).
This plate may probably represent either Pyrithoiis or
Croton engaged with one of the Centaurs. To explain the
meaning of the rays of light, the Ivy leaves, and the three
mysterious points in this and the following plate, is left for
the deep learned Antiquarian ,
