Plate 19.) It is probable, that this plate represents
Medea, and Apsyrthus . Apolonius Rhodius (a) says that
when Jason was attacked by the Cholchians in the Adria-
tic sea, seeing himself in danger of falling into their hands,
he had recourse to this stratagem. He agreed with Medea
to offer rich presents to Apsyrthus and to draw him to a
desert Island dedicated to Diana, under the pretence of
speaking to his sitter, and of settling every thing amica-
bly . It was resolved, that Jason should place himself in
ambuscade in that desert Island and should fall upon his
enemy, and kill him. Apsyrthus fell into the trap , and
went to the appointed place.
This plate is supposed to represent him debating with
Medea, and on the point of leaving her *, it was in that
moment that Jason came out of his hiding place and kil-
led him. This most elegant vase was found at Nola.
Plate 20. ) Neoptolemus hearing that his spouse Her-
mione had been given in marriage to Orestes , went
to reclaim her from Menelas, who not to break his pro-
mise, took her from Orestes, and restored her to Neopto-
lemus. Orestes felt this injury, and killed his rival while
he was performing a sacrifice at Delphos , and returned
to Sparta to recover Hermione {b).
This plate represents Menelas , Orestes seizing Her-
mione , who making some resistance , says, that her Fa-
ther had given her to Neoptolemus. Orestes is represented
with a naked sword either by way of acquainting her that
he had killed Neoptolemus, or perhaps to menace her in
case she should obje6fc to their reunion.
