Plate 21.) Adrastus having promised Poly nice, to whom
he had given his Daughter in marriage to assist him against
his Brother , and reestablish him in his right to the King-
dom of Thebes, had summoned all the Princes of his
states to join their forces to his, and to form an expedi-
tion against Thebes. Among the Princes there was one
called Amphiaraus, who was very expert in soretelling fu-
turity , he knew, that all the Chiefs of the the confede-
rate army, except Adrastus, would perish in that expedi-
tion, he was therefore far from being desirous of engaging
in it himself , and tried to dissuade the others from it.
Eriphile his wife having received from Polynice a prefent
of a rich necklace determines him to enter into the views
of Adrastus, which she had the power of doing in con-
sequence of a convention between Adrastus and Amphia-
raus , that in all disputes, they might have, Eriphile should
be their Judge , and that they would never depart from
her decisson.
The two figures on the right hand in this plate are
Amphiaraus with his Prophetic robe and stick, and Eri-
phile who has just declared for the requisition of Adrastus.
The sigures on the inside of the Patera are Amphiaraus
and a Genius with a helmet indicating that Amphiaraus
deliberates upon the part he is to a6t, and decides rather to
go and die , than ast contrary to the convention subsisting
between him and Adrastus. The two figures on the lest,
are supposed to be Eriphile pursued by her son Alcmeon,
W ho had been instigated by his Father to revenge his caufe.
