volvement of those concerned and longer project duration.
From this brief discussion of the characteristics of church sponsored develop-
ment work it is clear that churches, congregations and church organisations
can be useful partners for the effective realisation of meanigful development
aid projects. Thus the Federal Republic of Germany, shortly after the found-
ing of an independent Ministry for development aid in 1961, offered to support
both large churches in Germany in their development work. It recognised that
these organisations, through their mission work, were able to offer the richest
experience of the Third World. The churches, which had already founded the
“Misereor” and “Bread for the World” welfare organisations, and were pro-
moting other development targeted projects using charity and church funding,
