Harrisse 241. Sabin 16662. Humboldt, Cosmos II, p. 498 seq.
The very rare original edition of this epoch-making work, in which
Copernicus represented the sun as occupying a centre round which the earth and
the other planets revolve. This new system was such a revolutionary one that
Copernicus long deferred the publication of the work, fearing the opposition of the
Church on account of his scientific results being inconsistent with some passages in
the Holy Scripture. In fact his great work remained in MS. for thirteen years after
he had completed it; and it was only a few hours before his death that a printed
copy was presented to him, giving him assurance that his opinions would see the
light, though he would be beyond the reach of censure and persecution.
The dedication of the work to Pope Paul III prevented Copernicus’ system from
being immediately suppressed by the Church. Yet in 1616, in connection with the
troubles brought about by Galilei, the work was put on the index, from which it
was not removed until 1757.
Book I chap. Ill treats of America. Somewhat stained and wormed. MS. note
on title. Otherwise a good copy.
Karl We Hiersemann in Leipzig, Königstrasse 29. Katalog 572.
