There is not any need whatever to dwell on the outstanding merits of the present
work, one of the most important sources for the history of the discovery of America.
Petrus Martyr ab Angleria 11455—1526), was the friend or contemporary of Columbus,
Vasco da Gama, Cortes, Magellan, Cabot and Vespucius, and owing to his high po-
litical and literary position he was enabled to obtain much valuable and authentic
materials in regard to the great navigations of his time. The present edition is the
first reprint of the exceedingly rare Alcala edition of 1516, containing the three first
decades. LI. 68—75 contain: de insulis nuper inventis; LI. 75 — 92; legatio Baby-
lonica (See Paulitschke 312).
Title and last 3 leaves somewhat spoiled. Last leaf mounted. With one worm-
hole; partly with slight waterstains on the margin.
With inscription of a previous owner: J. D. Pamelius, and numerous old marginal
notes.
