volume of Esquemelin’s “Hist, des aventuriers flibustiers”, and ist stated by Leclerc
to be the best of all that were inserted in that work.

1. Original report dated Havana March 1822 on the conditions on Cuba and in
Mexico, criticism on the Spanish officials and the insurgents, purchase of ships. 4 pages
imp. 4 to, closely written. The Juan Ulua (= Ulloa) here mentioned is apparently a
close relation of the well known scholars G. Juan and Antonio de Ulloa of Ecuador
(18 th century).
2. Military reports of 1822 on the conditions on Cuba, Portorico, Santa Domingo,
in La Plata, Peru and especially Venezuela. Some remarks an General Bolivar himself.

3. Copies of 3 letters of Bolivar of 1809 and 1810.

historical treatise of 1773 “sobre la America Portuguesa”, and

The background of the events here related is formed by the American war of
independence against England, which was endeavouring by all means to prevent the
Spaniards from joining her adversaries on the side of the French. Therefore the many
conflicts the Spanish met with. The Spanish expedition under the command of General
Piedro Ceballos — the decree of his nomination is added (page 38) — can be closely
followed in the military diary. The fights in Brazil and Uruguay were apparently
heavier than those near Hayti. The identification of the leading persons by the
different signatures is still to be ascertained. To the printed paper there belongs a
