The first (blank) leaf with the royal arms of Spain. Siguenza was a native of
Mexico, born in 1645, died 1700. He was esteemed as the most celebrated of the Literati
of Mexico, and published several works. This “Parayso” is a history of the foundation
of the Monastery of Jesus and Maria of Mexico in the lives of its members. See
Berist. Bibl.-Hisp.-Amer. Ill, p. 160.

remains, both architectural and sculptural, of Old Peruvian art. The instructive and
valuable illustrations are taken from original photographs made by the author himself
and will no doubt throw much new light on this branch of American archaeology.

Not in the trade. This is the first edition of the manuscript to be published
in coloured reproduction, the 1887 edition published by the Museo Nacional
being a small number of uncoloured copies only. The manuscript consists of 18 painted
leaves which find a careful explanation by Mr. Seler on as many corresponding leaves.
The accompanying text itself (146 pp.) is illustrated by many woodcuts and gives the
history, description and the contents of the manuscript. There is also a detailed disser-
tation on the calendary-system of the Mexican natives. At the end an extensive index
of Mexican manuscripts is added.
