(folioed 1 — 204, the foliation jumping from 8 to 17).
The rare second edition of this very important work, characterized by Mr. C. R. Markham
(Hakluyt reprint 1864) as “one of the most remarkable literary productions
of the age of Spanish conquest in America”. It is, in fact, the only book
which exhibits the physical aspect of the country as it existed under the elaborate
culture of the Incas (see Prescott II, 328).
Pedro de Cieza de Leon was born in 1518 and went at the age of 13 to the West
Indies where he took part in several expeditions of George Robledo. In 1547 he went
to Peru and began to write down the present chronicle, “la mas concienzuda y mas
compléta que se ha escrito de las regiones sur-americanas” (D. Marcos Jimenez de la
Espada). The work is based on official documents and the author’s own observations
made during his travels through the country. It was divided into 4 books of which
only the first was printed, containing the geography of the country and the manners
and customs of the inhabitants.
An outstanding feature of the present book are a series of small woodcuts
(ca. SX7 cm) amongst which we should like to point out the most interesting
views of the city of Cuzco (1. 165), of the Lake Titicaca (1. 180) and the
Cerro de Potosi (1. 186). As to the priority of our edition to the Bellero-Steelsius
edition of the same year see the privilege on the verso of title-page of our copy and
the notes to Sabin 13046 and Salva 3239.
Insignificantly waterstained at the beginning, neat old inscription on title-page,
otherwise in excellent condition.
