of which being theretofore unpublished.
The contents of the volumes relate to the following countries:
I. America: North-America (Louisiana, California, Canada), Central-America (Mexico,
Panama, Antilles) and South-America (Chile, Peru, Brazil, particularly Paraguay).

V. Europe: Turkey, Greece, Russia.
Copies containing all the 36 parts as the present one are of the extremçst rarity.
A small number of leaves and maps are skilfully mended on the margin. From a
few title-pages and half-titles a small piece (originally bearing the library stamp) has
been cut out.

in Europam. Secunda pars. 4. Upsaliae (1802). Vellum. 80 —
The present second part was published two years after the first and embraces the
larger portion of the dissertation (= pp. 9 281. The books treats of the history of
colonisation of the Spaniards, Portuguese, English, French, Danes and Swedes, gives
the motives for emigration, censuring chiefly the greed of gold on the part of the
early settlers. Left-hand top corner torn away (without loss of text). Some traces
of waterstains.

prey). 2nd edit. With 77 coloured plates and 1 portr. 4 to.
London 1922. Red morocco extra, top gilt. In a padded linen

This is no. 6.
88 TARICH ÜL-HIND ÜL-GHARBI. (A new history of the West-
Indies.) A Turkish book printed at Stamboul (by Ibrahim?) in
the year 1142 of the Hegirah (= A. D. 1729). Small 4to.
With two double page worldmaps, 1 astron, table and
12 interesting woodcuts. 89 (instead of 91) 11. Old Boards,
partly restored. 220 —
See reproduction on page 25.
As appears from the preface the work was printed in the reign of the Sultan
Achmed I at the instigation of the vizier Ibrahim Pascha. The name of the author
is not known and there is still some uncertainty whether the book is to be ascribed
to the printer Ibrahim or not.
After giving a survey of the geographical knowledge of the ancient writers the
work treats of the expeditions made by the Spaniards and other peoples to the West
Indies. Full account is given of the inhabitants, the flora and fauna of the American
continent. Though the description is occasionally of a somewhat miraculous character,
the chief value of the book lies in its being written from the oriental point of view.
The cuts illustrate animals and plants of the New World. Of a particular interest
are the two worldmaps betraying a rather astonishing ignorance. In both maps
California is put down as an island. Hudson-Bay is of an outstreched shape, Central
America occupies too much space, whereas South America is rather compressed.
The situation of Australia is given fairly well, and New Guinea is laid down in
both maps.
