attention without any consideration of party politics"......Deputy

Kalimpong, June 17.

Sri S K Rai, Deputy
Minister for labour, Govern-
ment of West Bengal was
welcomed here this after-
noon in the Town Hall by
the citizens of Kalimpong.
Sri Ram Krishna Sharma
of the local Bar presided
Speeches were made by
Sri Tika Ram Sharma,
E litor ‘Gorkha’ and Sri
Moti Chand Pradhan of
Kalimpong expressing con-
fi ;enee in Sri Rai.

Replying Sri Rai said
that previously when he was
only an m.I. a., he was a
freeman and belonged to
his party but now he is a
member of the West Ben-
gal Govt, and he shared
joint responsibility with other
members of the ministry.
As such, the Deputy Minis-
ter continued, he could not
make any promise for fu-
^ ture but assure 1 the people
that their problems would
receive the Govt.’s iust con-
sideration and as a man of
Darjeeling district he would
give lull attention to the
problems of this district.
“The sorrows and jovs”
he went on to say ‘‘of
plainsmen and hillmen in
the Darjeeling District were
tiie same and he would not
make any distinction bet-

ween communities and co-
mmunities when dealing
with their problems”,
(cheers).

Sri R K. Sharma in
his presidential speech said
that with the appointment
of Mr. Rai as a Deputy
Minister the existing gulf
between the West Bengal
Govt, and the Go kha Lea-
gue has narrowed down and
he hoped that Mr. Rai’s
achievements in the minis-
try will brighten the face
of the hillmen. he res-
ponsibili y with which Mr.
Rai has been saddled has
put the whole community
under test and it will be)
for Sri Rai to prpve to
the world that the Gorkpas
are not mere soldiers and
politicians but are capable
statesmen also.

Later Sri Rai was en-
tertained at a Tea party in
the local Gompu's by Sri
Onkar Mull Mintri, a Muni-
cipal Commissioner of the
Kalimpong Municipality
where the elite of the town
were present. Sri Mintri
was all attention to the

Gold Medals for Dr. Boral
and Nani Ghosh

Kalimpong, June 15

The local Maitri San-
gha staged Sri Surendra-
nath Bandyopad haya's ‘Sa-
ranu' in Bengali on the
local Town Hall stage
before a distinguished ga-
thering of men, wbmen
and children this night.
The play was arranged ,in
aid of the Maitri Sangha
and for a reserve fund
for a permanent Durga
Mandap at Kalimpong.
The total collection was
approximately Rs. 700/-.

Direction was Dr.
Boral’sj Music was conduc-
ted by Sri Gopal Dutta
and Art in stage and
green room was accom-
plished by Banamali De
and Kalyan Mukherjee:
£tage and light were con-
trolled jointly by Saral
Roy, Ramesh Paul and
Dilip Chatterjee. Mr. Raut,
Assitt. Collector of Central
Excise was a great help
in the green-room.
