EVEREST CONQUERED

Tenzing Nork&y and
E.P. Hillary, two members
of the British Everest
Expedition reached Mount
Everest on May 29, 1953.

Though born in Nepal,
39 years old Tenzing is
an Indian citizen settled
in Darjeeling. ■ 34 years old
Hillary in a Now Zea-
lander. Shferpa Tenzing
has a long and gallant
record of Himalayan climb-
ing and this was his 8th
attemp, his first, Everest
venture being with Erio
Shipton in 1935.

The West Bengal Go-
vernment will give Tenzing
a state reception and will
also present ‘A Purse! to
him. A reception on a
national scale awaits him
when he returns to Khat-
mandu. Nepal may give
Tenzing a life pension.

The Municipal Commi-
ssioner of Darjeeling have
.decided to give a civic
reception to Tenzing soon
after he returns to Dar-
jeeling.

The expedition may
be back to IChatnrandu by
the end of this month.

CORONATION FESTIVITIES
AT KALIMPONG

Kalimpong, June 2

A reception was held
in honour of Coronation
day, at Tashiding, by
Their Royal Highnesses
Prince Peter and Princess
Irene of Greece and Den-
mai k.

After cocktails the
guests gathered round a
buffet worthy of the
greatest traditions.
