WORLD PATTERNS .

Kahmpong, June 20

Tender the auspices of the Sanskriti
Parishad of the local Maitri Sangha,
Dr. Walter Liebenthal, Professor of Chi-
nese Buddhism at the Visva Bharati
University gave a talk on “ World
patterns ’ at G P. M. on 14-0 53 in the
Town Hall.

While defining “ World Pattern
he stated that we .create our world
while we interpret it. There are different
interpretations of world e.g. ‘ a stream",
‘ an ocean”,‘.‘suffering’’, “a gift of God”,
“a thought ’, “a play”, “a pilgrimage”,
“a battle lipid”, “an occasion to do
penance” etc. All these interpretations
are fictions, because these are 'nothing
but metaphors, we can not sav what
world really is. This fiction is all that
therp is a world, it is the onlv .reality
in which we pass, live and die. This
is Maya and life is the creation of
Maya. Outside this inner world, which
is the creation of May's, there is another
world which ive do riot create but
experience.

After disi ussing these fundamental
points the speaker defined‘‘world patterns”
again. Ho stated that it is neither
cosmography, nor scientific theory dealing
with nature*'* ‘‘World pattern” is that,
mental pattern or picture in which we
understand ourselves. It defines our
hones, goals, & position in the costnio
whole, sets standard of values, utopias
& ideals expressed in religion, art, music,
poetry, philosophy, dance & symbols.
It creates individual life and history.

3 hen the speaker tried to establish
a retation between “world pattern” &
history of mankind by stating that
history is noting but the traces of
movements of human beings towards
their goals expressive of their world
interpretations.
