WEST BENGAL ANIMAL SLAUGHTER
CONTROL ACT (1950)

EXTENDED TO KALIMPONG

Kalimpong, August 4

Following a three day
unprecedented Hartal in
Kalimpong and represen-
tations to the West Bengal
Government, the West
Bengal Animal Slaughter
Control Act (1950) has
been extended to Kalim-
pong municipality. The
Act regulates the wanton
killing of animals and
lays down that healthy
and serviciable Cow, Bulls,
Bullocks, Buffaloes of less
than 15 years of age will
not be slaughtered. Besides,
the local butchers have
agreed not toslaughter any
cow, calf, and bull, what-
ever their age and their
this gesture^ if put into
actual practice, will go a
great length in establishing
cordiality between those
who kill and those who do
not like it.

MARKETING OF PRODUCE
IN KUKSEONG

Under the initiative
of the Sub-Divisional Offi-
cer, Kurseong, various
marketing development
steps have been taken up
in the subdivision that
will cater to the local
needs and be of immense
benefit to the growers.

VANA-MAHOTSAVA

Darjeeling, Aug. 2

The 4th Vanamahot-
sava was celebrated at
Rimbik, Lodhoma and
Jhepi Bazar on 1st, 2nd
and 7th July respectively.
The function was orga-
nised by the local organi-
sations and educational
institutions with the co-
operation of the Agricultu-
ral staff of the West
Bengal Government. All
the ceremonies were atten-
ded by the local cultiva-
tors, teachers and school
children and mar>dals who
took great interest in
planting seedlings on the
occasions. The people were
explained as to the need
of afforestation in our
country and the signifi-
cance of Vanamahotsava.

The Pankhabari Hat, which
lies just at the foot of the
hills, has been revived
after fifty years It
has not only removed a
Jongfelt want of the loca-
lity but will also keep up
easy flow of agricultural
commodities to the hills
connecting it with Mati-
garha, the largest market
place in the district.

STIPENDS FOR BACKWARD

Applications for West
Bengal Government special
stipends in the prescribed
forms from poor and meri-
torious students belonging
to scheduled castes, sche-
duled tribes and other edu-
cationally backward classes
and Muslims studying be-
yond the School Final stage
in the recognised general,
professional, technical, and
vocational institutions in
West Bengal during the
current year should reach
the Director of Public
Instruction, West Bengal,
Writers’ Buildings, Calcutta
for consideration through
the Head of institutions as
early as possible before Au-
gust 31, 1953. Circulars in
this regard have been sent
to the heads of institutions
concerned and application
forms will be available there.

KOREAN WAR

Fighting in Korea ended
with cease fire on July, 27.
Final agreement on the
armistice was reached 3
years and 33 days after the
start of the war, which has
devastated the peninsula
and cost over 2,300,000
casualties on both sides.

The preamble to the
Armistice Agreement speci-
fies that armistice condi-
tions and terms are inten-
ded to be "purely military
in character and to pertain
solely to the belligerents
in Korea”.
