ex pect the type of results wti
get in physical sciences. Aiis-
totle observed that discussions
will he adequate if it has as
much clearness as. the subject-
matter admits of, for precision
is not to be sought for, alike
in all dsctissions. It is the
mark of an educated man ~t6
look for precision in each class
of things just so far as the
nature of the subject admits.
It is evidently equally foolish
to accept probable reasoning
from a mathematician and to
demand from a rhetorician
scientific proof."

There is a third battle
for men. The combatants are
man and his passions, preju-
dices, wild and untamed im-
pulses demonic and anti-social
emotions, uncharitable thoughts
and illiberal views. He ,has
to fight these things. Here,
religion ethics, philosophy help
man. If he is only at peace
with himself he can live in
harmony with others. Man
has to successfully combat his
jnner divisions and passions.
It is education that enables
him to fight the three battles,
with nature, with fellow-men
and with himself. Social scien-
ces enable us to see the con-
flicts that men have and the
glory and the gloom of man.
The consciousness of the social
purpose makes social co-ope-
ration easy and natural. So-
cial sciences should not aim
at mere organisational changes.
An extremely regimented so-
ciety will give us/a prison-
hou*e and not a society of
free men. We need the help

of social philosophy to secure
the right orientation for pur-
poses of social organisation -
Organisation without orienta-
tion will be of no avail to us.
Orientation sets up the right
ends for organisation to achieve.
Man needs not merely the.
techniques of power, but he
needs the knowledge of ends
also.

The knowledge of ends is
the power of ideas. It is the
right ends that social services
should spread. Manis influenced
by ideas. He is the fountain
of creativity Social sciences
with their power techniques
should not stifle the creativity
in man: for. all progress is
the results of two (actors, in-
dividual creativity and social
cohesion On** makes f^r ad-
vance, another for preservation.
The force of social ideas is
great. The average man is
strangely poised between the
bright vault of He iven and
the dark pit of Hell. He is
not a complefe beast, nor a
blot on the universe He is,
.as the Orphics called "a child
of earth and starry heavens."

tor drivers is soon to ba
built at Siliguri. This
decision follows today's
talk between Mr P. K.
Sen, D.l.G. Trafflo, and
motor operators in Dar-
jeeling District.

Transport owners are
understood to have agreed
to Mr Sen's suggestion to
construct a rest houm for
drivers at Siliguri.
