INDIAN BID TO SCALE EVEREST

Darjeeling, July 12

Brigadier Gyan Singh,
leader of the Indian Eve-
reit Expedition, inter-
viewed today aaid though
Everest waa available for
scaling next year, the
sponsoring committaa of
the Indian Everest Ex
pedition preferred making
the next attempt in 1962
as olimbing that mountain
required great deal of
planning and organiza-
tional work besides a huge
finanoial commitment.

Moreover, as some of
the present members were
likely to be inoludrd in
the next Everest team.
Brig Gyan Singh felt ano-
ther attempt following to
soon might prove too
strenuous In. New Delhi
plan* were under way to
send two or three expe-
ditions to the Himalayas
in the Sikkim and Garh-
wal regions next yrar

and give further expe-
rience to some members
of the present Everest
team. •

Brig Gyan 8ingh was
personally interested in
imparting training to
youuger leaders who could
independently conduct ma-
jor expeditions The ex-
perience gathered by the
Everest team had proved
invaluable to the team

members. Brig Gyan
Singh aaid and the achieve-
ment both in team spirit
and mountaineering had
been one of the best.
For the first time he said,
a summll team of three
was obesen instead of the
usual two and the ex-
periment bad proved sue
cesful.

Financial sanction has
been received to construct
and equip the physiolo
fiical wing of the Hima-
iayan mouutaineerin ins-
titute. . ' .

Brig Gyan Singh ap-
pealed - to the publio to
contribute liberally to the
Jayal Memorial Fund
which had undertaken to
promote mountaineering.

PLAN TO ASSIST
GARDEN OWNERS
The Royal Agricul-
tural and Horticultural
Sooiety of India, Calcutta,,
initialed a programme on
Tuesday to assist those
interested in improving
their gardens I'r. P. K.
Sen, Head of the Depart-
ment of Agrioulture and
Hortieulture. of Calcutta
University, demonstrated
propagation of plants by
layering and geotee in
the Sooiety's garden. Dr.
Sen explained that gontees

VANAMAHOTSAVA

The 11th Vanamabot-
sava was observed cere
monously at Sukhabaray
Jbora Slides Area (Rishi
Road Kalimpong; on 12th
July, Sri D. C. Mookerjee,
S. D. 0., Kalimpong pre-
sided. The B.D.O , Alga-
r.ah. Extension Officials
and local people were pre-
sent. It was a first function
that bad a combination
of four K M. Blocks; viz., ^
Dala'pchan, Paiy.ung, San-
tuk & Sangsey. , The
funotions ended with,
mass tree planting and
distribution of sweets
amongst the . School chil-
dren of the adjoining K.M.
Block.
