KALIMPONG MELA

Editor:

«. c. jain ) Uinta

The annual Agriculture
exhibition at Kalimpong,
which was revived after
a gap of several yean,
will not b« held this year.
This dvoision wis taktti
by the lonal Block Deve-
lopment Committee. Thin
unilateral deoiiion by the
nominated members of the
Block Development Com-
mittee has oome an a
(hook to many. The exhi-
bition wai organised so
far with the active co-
operation of the memb-rs
of the public and it was
surprising why the members
of the Mela Committee
were not consulted before
taking any final decision,

Kalimpong Mela has
a great baok ground and
the people of Kalimpong
attached a great impor-
tance to it. Thousands
have been disappciited
due to the arbitrary deci-
sion of local Blook Deve-
lopment Committee Vil-
lagers who worked herd
throughout the ypar to
exhibit their puduote have
keen disappointed If the
Blook Development Com-
mittee is unable to organise
an annual, routine affair,
it it high, time that this

committee should be re-
constituted.

CHINESE SCHOOL IN
KALIMPONG RAIDED
Kalimpong, Jan. so

The looal Chung Wa
Chinese School has been
dosed for an indefinite
period following a raid on
the sohool by KMT. Chi.
nese and Tibetans here
early last month.

It may be reoalled
here that Nationalist Chi-
nese and Tibetans num-
bering about 215 raided
the school building, early
last month, and started
banging the. doors and
windows. The Chinese
staff of the sohool as also
some members of the
looal Chinese 1 rade Agency
were in the building.
The West Bengal police
reaohed the spot in time
and succeeded in persuad-
ing the orowd to leave
the oornpound. The raid,
ers went away' shouting
anti Communist slogans.

The Chinese trade
agency people have, it is
learnt, removed all move-
ables of the sohool to the
trade agency recently and
have taken charge of the
building.
