Attack on Post in Ladakf* Repulsed

New Delhi, October 25

After prolonged and
bitter fighting in the
town's outskirts, the Chi-
nese have occupied To-
wang, the farthest road-
head in the north-western
part of NEFA.

Towang is the first
"populated area-** in this
region which has fallen
to the invaders. Its popu-
lation is only about 300,
but Towang is a well-
known Buddhist centre.

The Indian troops,
who had fought gallantly
for over 24 hours, with-
drew on Wednesday even-
ing in the face of a mas-
sive three pronged attaok
by the Chinese. The with-
drawal was according to
p!an and a large propor-
tion of the local popula-
tion including the brad
pricest and other monks
of the local monastery,
were safety evacuated
The monastery, it was
officially stated today,
was safe.

what disturbing develop

ment was the Chinese

miles from Chushul. The
attack was repulsed but
it indicates that a Chinese
threat to Chushul itself
might develop soon.

Giving an asiessment
of the casualties as a
result of the India-China
fighting since last Satur-
day, an official spokes-
man today said: 'Our
own casualties have been
heavy". He added how-
ever, that "our troops
put up stiff resistance and
navfc inflicted heavier
casualties on the aggres-
eiors".
