there was in 1948-49 only
one university in the
whole of the State, there
are at present five and
a sixth is being set up
in North Bengal. There
has been a corresponding
inorease in the number
of students. . While in
1946-47 there were 9.60
lakh students in primary
schools, in 1960 61 the
number inoreased to over
2S lakh. Special atten-
tion hai been paid to
engineering and technical
,studies. The numbir of
engineering colleges has
risen from 2 to 4 during
the last >0 years. In
1959-60 there were 21
engineering schools and
158 technical and indus-
trial institutions as against
one engineering sobool
and 76 technical and in-
dustrial institutions in
1948 49.
