NEW ROAD TO 6IJANBARI UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Rs. 30 Lakh Scheme Being Implemented

Darjeeling, May 2

About 1,500 workers
are now engaged iu cons-
tructing an all weather
truokable road through
hills and forests connec-
ting Darjeeling with Pool-
bazar and Bij&nbari.
Taking <>ff t'rom the
Ghoom—Sukbia Pokhri
road near Bhnjang, the
uejr road will be 15 niilis
in length ai d is expected
to be enmpleted by 1962-
63 at an estimated expen-
diture of Ra 30 lakb.

The work was taken
up in Maroh last year
And is being continued
without interrupting the
restricted flow of traffic
along the existing narrow
and stiff road Thirty to
forty per oent of the
work comprises rock cut-
ting and blasting

The new road follows
the existing forest path
for the lirst six miles
aid then makes a new
alignment avoiding the
•tiff and narrow road
throfigh the" tta garden
areas A number of cul-
verts will have to be
constructed along the road
and these will be a major
bridge at about 200 feet
span over the Little Ban-
git near Poolbazar. The
aveiage width of the new

road will be 20 feet in
p'ace of seven to eight
feet of the existing road.

When completed the
road will be of great be-
nefit not only to the
neighbouring tea gardens,
who have nt present to
depend mainly on rope-
ways with limited capa-
city, but to the general
people of Bijanbari areas
also. Poolbazar and Bi-
janbnri are not only
famous for their orange
and other fruits orchards
but are alto important
markets for cattle and
milk products. The new'
road will give the people
of those areas better mar-
keting and easier com-
munication facilities.

NEHRU TO OPEN
BHUTAN ROAD

New Delhi, May I
Mr. Jigme Dorje,
Prime Minister of Bhutan,
said today in an inter-
view that the Pbuuoho'
ling—Paro road will be
opened by Mr. Nehru in
the third week of this
month.

The newly construc-
ted road, he added, would
be at present a jeepable
road, about H ft. wide.
During the next two or
three years, it would be

experts would now visit
the southern towns of
Biratnsgari Birgunj and
Bhairawa. 'I hereafter it
will submit a comprehen-
sive report to the Ne-
palese Government. The
site of the factory and
its capacity will be deoi-
ded after this report is -
received.
