been forcibly settled in
Sikkim in the teeth of
violent opposition from
the Sikkimese people, who
feel, and rightly so, that
they should not be ssttled
in the border area. But
the voice of the people
of Sikkim is gagged, and
frustration and disillusion-
ment grow apaoe.

The Notes further
state that "the policy of
so-called non-intervention
towards the issue of free-
dom in the Himalayan
region has resulted in
strengthening a ruling
class whioh is unconcer-
ned about freedom or de-

CHINESE IMPOSE DUTY
ON NEPALESE GOODS
Kathmandu, June 28

Chinese authorities in
Kuti and Keyrong have
imposed duty on goods
to be imported from and
exported to Nepal, it is
reported here. A hund-
red per cent duty was
imposed on liquor and
ooemetios, 80% on tea,
coffee and cigarettes and
40% on spices.

The Chinese Govern-
ment has banned import
of gold-silver, explosives,
radios, transformers and
wireless sets. On items
exported to Nepal, such
a9 sheep and yak tails,
duties range from 10%
to 30%.

CHINESE AID TO NEPAL
New Delhi, June 28

The Nepalese Govern-
ment is considering a pro-
posal to set up leather
processing and psper fac-
tories in Nepal with Chi-
nese technical and finan-
cial assistance.

Giving this informa-
tion Mr. Dinenh Singh
told Mr. Nawab Singh
Chauhan in the Lok Sabha
on Tuesday that there
had been no consultation
between the Nepalese Go-
vernment and the Govern-
ment of India on these
factories.

TRAINING CENTSES IN

SILIGURl BLOCK

Siliguri, June 20

A Training Cum-Pro-
duotion Centre in Til*
making has recently been
started at Jugibhita nearly
seven miles from Siliguri
Town. There is a good
demand for Tiles in these
areas specially at the Tea
gardens for construction
of labour quarters. At
present, Tiles are oolleo-
ted from Maynaguri and
Cooohbehar.

Fifteen ex-trainees of
Handloom Weaving Trai.
ning-Cum-Produetion Cen-
tre, conducted by the
Siliguri-Naxalbari. C. D.
Block, have formed a co-
operative Sooiety called
"Terai Tantubaya 8ilpa
Samabay Samity Ltd."
at Atharakhai.

Artisans belonging to
Scheduled Castes and Tri-
bes residing witbing the
Block have been- given
grants-in-aid of Hs. 13,680/•
from the Tribal Welfare
Deptt., during the last
two years for promotion
of their respective trades.
This grant has been ex-
tended to 129 artisans on
an average of Rs. 106/-
each.
