RESEARCH WORK ON
HIMALAYAN PLANT
Darjeuling Aug. 22
Research work oarried
out on a drug manufac-
tured from a Himalayan
plant, Podophyllum, indi-
cates it might prove effeo
tive in oombating some
types of oancer. Talking
to member! of the Dar-
jeeling Rotary Club Dr.
Fany Renz, a Swiss re-
search scholar, said ex-
periments on the drug
had started about 10
years ago at the Sandos
Laboratory, Basle, Swit-
zerland, and the drug
had been tried clinioally
for the past five years.
It had, in some cases,
yielded encouraging results
in the treatment of malig-
nant growths and preven-
ted the, formation of
metastasis.

The Podophyllum
plant is found ill the Hi-
malayas and in North
America, though the Ame-
rican plant is not chemi-
cally similar to the Hi-
malayan variety. The
plant growB in the Alpine
regions and is to be found
ill elevations of over
12,600 feet.

AGRICULTURE PLANNING

{Continued from page 71
level. Our total produc-
tion of foodgrains during
1960-61 was about 79
million tons During 1961-
62, the foodgrains produc-
tion in the oounlry to-
talled up to only 80 mil-
lion tons. The target fos1
1962-63 has been placed
at 84 million tons, in
order to achieve 100 mil-
lion tons by the end of
the Third Plan. On an
average our rate of growth
in agriculture should be
about six per esnt. This
is, surely, not an easy
task and every nerve will
have to ba strained to
fulfil these targets The
Central and the State
Governments must, there-
fore, exercise continuous
vigilance and a dense of
urgency in pursuing dif-
ferent agricultural pro-
grammes to a successful
conclusion. Courtesy:
