PROGRESS IN THE FIELD OF
AGRICULTURE
In spit* of adverse weather conditions and attack
of insect pests, West Bengal bad a produotion of 43
lakh tons of Auiau paddy on 95.60 lakh acred of land
during 1961-62.

About 40,000 maunds of improved paddy seed?

were distributed and about 6,tOU maunds were also
distributed free to the cultivators in the distressed
areas duriug 1961-6!!.

Chemical fertilisers including 83,000 tons of

amonium sulphate and 33,347 tons of super phoshate
were distributed among the cultivators duriug 1961-62.

In order to demonstrate improved methods of
cultivation, 970 Demonstration Centres were laid
throughout West Bengal.

Several measures undertaken for increasing the

yield of food crops will help to build a

AT KURSEONG
Kuraeong, Sept, 6

The Teachers' Day
was observed at Kurseoug
on 5th September 1962
in a befitting manner.
In the morning, the stu-
dents of various schools
took out a procession
from Monteviot Ground
and paraded the main
streets of the Town. The
slogan "Dr. Radbakrish-
nan Zindabad" given by
the students rent the air.

variety shows presented
by the local sohools. Do-
cumentary film of edu-
cative value were also

Department. Collnctiona

of flags from the different
educational institutions.

The managing Com-

Junior High School, Pa-
chen Bazar, Sonada orga-
nised a Debate competi-
tion among the local
school teachers at the
school premises on 2nd
September, 1962. Sri R.K.
Dixit, Manager, lloouda-
kothi 1'ea Estate presided

over the meeting The sub-
ject of the debate was 'Wta.
ther Britishers did good to
India.' A large number of
Tea Garden labourers en-
joyed thedebate throughly.
The teachers from Sonada
and Nalichor led by Sri
N.N. Mukhia who debated
against won the coveted
trophy. Mrs. Dixit gave
away the prizes.
