Just returned from a
tour of Sweden, Switzer-
land and Britain, Mr.
Jigma Dorji, Prime Minis-
ter of Bhutan, expressed
'surprise aad indignation"

Mr. Dorji said he
went abroad for a working
holiday. Before he left,
the Indian Government
had already recommended
Bhutan for membership
of the Colombo Plan.

India knew of Mr
Dorji'a intention to sound
out Swedish industry
about a paper-pulp mill
for Bhutan, and that he
waa searohing for medical
and educational experts
iu England.

In an off-tht-ouff
statement Mr. Dorji said.

IMPROVEMENT OF IRRIGATION SYSTEM
. I IN WEST BENGAL

The total irrigable command of the schemes of
Irrigation & Waterways Department, Government OE
West Bengal was 3,64,497 acres at the commencement,
of the year 1947-48. This figure was raised to 7,21,000
acrss at the end of the First Five Year Plan period,
and to 17,32,000 acres at the end of the Second
Plan period. Irrigation facilities are, further, being
extended during the Third Plan period.

Areas benefited by the medium and miser
drainage schemes of the Irrigation & Waterway
Department at the end of the yeur 1965 66 were
4 83,000 acres, which went up to 8.76,0C0 scree by
the end of 1960 61. Areas proteoted by the flood
protection works at the end of 1655-56 core 82,C0C?
acres and it came up to 2,34,000 acres , a % the end
of 19o0«l,
