DISTRICT FARMER'S FIELD DAY AT KALHIPOM

Farmers asked to Raise Production

Kalimpong, December 26.

About 400 delegates,
Farmers & progressive cul-
tivators of Darjeeling Dis-
trict attended the District
Farmers Field Day & Se
minar at the State Agri-
cultural Farm here today.

Ia the morning the
farmers were taken round
the farm in different
batches and the officprs
of the Deptt. concerned
explained the methods &
ways of bringing rapid
improvement in the fields.
After launch the fsrmerB
explained their difficulties
in their day to day work
and requested the officer
concerned to help them
solve their problems.

At 2 P. of. a meeting
i waB organised in the Farm
premises where a larga
number of cultivators were
present.

He exhorted them to taken
advantage of the various
Govt, schemes for more
production of vegetables
cereals and devise ways
and maans for maximum
production.

Several speakers spoke
on the need of improv-
ing agricultural methods,
forming of agricultural &
marketing Co operative So-
cieties, using of better
seeds, fertilizes & imple-
ments so as to prove that
the cultivator were also
equally awakened to share
the responsibilities of the
nation in driving out the
intruders.

Sri S.N Chakravarty,
Dy. Director of Agricul-
ture, Northern Range in-
formed the gathering that
many cultivators of Nor-
thern Range had decided
to earmark one acre of
land for growing vegetables
for the Jawans.

DOGS USED TO SCOUT
FORWARD AREAS

Tezpur, Dec. 2£
Confirmation is now
available here that the
Chinese made good use
of trained Tibetan dogs
to scout forward positions
during th»ir invasion of
NEFA.

The dogs were used
to detect Indian positions
and patrolB and actually
led the Chinese advance
in certain areas.

One dog was captured
by Indian troops and
named "Chink". At pre-
sent it locks quite dooiie.

SIKKIM CIVIL DEFENCE
Gangtok, Dec. 27
The Sikkim Peoples
Consultative Committee,
which met here yesterday
to discuss measures in re»
gard to civil defence, has
decided to introduce black-
out gradually in the towns
of Sikkim and dig trenches
as a precaution against
any possible enemy attack.
The committee has also
decided to train volunteero
in fire-fiehting end in
first aid. Locul committees
at various places will be
formed to implement :he-
above programmes in then-
respective areas.
