CHAPTER VII

We must also bear in mind that many such acts as those recorded
by us failed to be noticed. Owing to combats sometimes having
taken place at night, it was impossible to distinguish any particular
act of individual bravery. Then again both the hero and the eye-
witnesses of his act were often utterly wiped out, leaving notasoul to
recount the former’s exploit. From these and other causes many a
man who fully deserved the V. C. never had a chance of gaining that
highest award of valour.
