CATALOGUE OF MANUSCRIPTS

[233

Dec. Medallions', man killing black pig with back of axe. Capricorn
ending in smooth blue tail; fore-part white.
29. Thomas in gold, partly washed out.
Frontispiece to Beatus vir. Frame; gold corners, the rest
half blue, half lake, with white patterns. Ground of C.
(which is a cusped quatrefoil) gold hatched with a trellis.
Grounds of spandrels, 2 blue, 2 lake with lattice, network, or
rings in white. In C. Christ throned blessing. His L. hand
on a white globe resting on the throne. The nimbus grey
with red cross, the robe blue lined with white fur, over lake,
the hair red-brown. In the spandrels the Evangelistic emblems
each bearing name on scroll. It is fine work but hard: the
expression of Christ’s face is unfortunate : the eyes are turned
upward and the corners of the mouth downward.
Beatus vir. Bordered page and large initial by another
hand whose touch is lighter, and whose heads are reminiscent
of Q. Mary’s Psalter. Grotesques in upper and lower mar-
gins are very carefully drawn and painted. The outer frame
of the field surrounding the B is mostly chequer of silver and
red. The B is in blue, framing vermilion, patterned in
white: top and bottom of the shaft blossom into beautiful
leaves, pink, green and scarlet, with white ribs. The inner
ground of the letter, where not of punctured gold, is dark
with network in lighter colour. The Tree contains («) vertically
up the C. 1, Jesse in scarlet mantle reclining under cusped
arch; 2, Crucifixion with Mary and John; 3, Virgin with
sceptre, and child; 4, Christ with orb blessing; (£) L. side
from bottom : 1, David with harp; 2, 3, Prophets with scrolls;
4, 5, in spandrels, two more robed figures. (C.) R. side from
bottom: 1-3, robed figures, the uppermost with scroll;
4, 5, in spandrels one prophet with scroll and one robed
figure.
The grotesques at top and bottom are excellent. Those at
top have the more colour. Those at bottom correspond with
some in the Grey-Clifford Hours in the Fitzwilliam
Museum. They are a bearded shaggy head on two hairy legs,
a bearded head in close cap on two human legs, with tail,
a small lion curled up, a nude crowned man beardless seated
holding a spear upright, his L. hand to his face. Bull..,
pl. xxxvii. cf. Fitzwilliam Catalogue, pl. xviii.
Ps. 2. Initial, bust of bishop. The initials of verses on
each page are connected by a bar of colour spreading out at
top and bottom into ornament, often with a grotesque bust
or the like at top. The line-fillings soon begin to be heraldic
in character. Here is a survey of initials and line-fillings that
appear worth noting.
