Bonnet {1720—1793) was a Swiss naturalist and philosopher. ,,He gives in his .Contemplation de 1<
nature' the most complete expression of the idea of a ,,scale of beings" which he extends to the whole
universe. Well known are his investigations on the parthenogenesis of plant lice, and his experiments
on certain fresh-water worms, proving that cut-up speeimens will grow again into complete worms. His
theories on generation are also of importance. In his treatise on insects he gives interesting views of
the strueture and reproduetions of these animals. Noteworthy is valuable work on the use of plant
leaves, in which he detailed numerous experiments in vegetable absorption and respiration." — Cf.
