J. & J. LEIGHTON, Ltd.

140 COMINES (Philip de) The Historie of [transl. by T. Danett]. £2 5s.
J. Bill 1614
Sm. fol., orig. calf, slight stains, and woodcut title shaved at fore-edge, but sound and fair
margins : all the genealogies at end. Sayle 3376.
Levante & in Ponente]. £4 10s. Venice, L. Spineda, 1612
Sm. 4to, 2 pts. in 1, orig. limp vellum, remains of ties, slight waterstains, large copy. Each
part has separate paging and quiring, and apart from each other they would appear as different
publications but for the mention of the Portolano on the first title. Interesting translation of
the Catalan (or Provencal ?) Consolat de Mar or Laws of Navigation : at end is the original
colophon dated Barcelona, 8 Oct., 1481.
CONSTITUTIONAL HISTORY (Early Books on). See our Catal. N.S. Pt. 7.
142 COOKE (Alex.) Yet more Worke for a Masse-Priest. £4 10s.
W. Jones, sold by W. Sheffard, 1622
Sm. 4to, half bound, very large copy with final blank. Interesting woodcut device of a printing
office on title (McKerrow 389) apparently not mentioned in Madan’s Article in Bibliographica :
the workmen carry lighted candles on their heads. Not in Sayle, B.M. 404. The tract is
bibliographically interesting as giving some account of the Indices Lib. Prohib. and enquiring
why certain authors and editions were there placed.
143 COOPER (T,) Thesaurus Linguae Romanae & Britannicae...acc. Dic-
tionarium Historicum et poeticum...in aed. quondam Bertheleti. £4 10s.
London, per H. Wykes, 16 Mar., 1565
Stout folio, half leather, fine copy, partly uncut, with 2 of the 3 blanks. First ed. dedic. to R.
Dudley, Earl of Leicester, with his woodcut badge on title. Prelim, verses in Greek and Latin
by various hands. This, the greatest literary work of the Bp. of Winchester incorporates the
dictionaries of Estienne and Elyot. Cooper’s wife tore up and burnt half the work when in
preparation but the author with admirable patience rewrote it; see D.N.B. The second
part consists of names, and includes “ America, a countrey late founde in the Weste parte of
the Worlde by Americus Vesputius.,.1477.” Columbus is not mentioned. Finely printed,
black letter, roman and a pretty italic. Sayle 1249. B.M. 406.
CORNEILLE (P.). See KEMPIS.
144 CORNWALLIS (Sir Charles) A Discourse of the Lyfe of the most illustrious
Prince Henrye, late Prince of Wales, wrytten Anno 1626. £12 10s.
MS. written (1626)
Sm. 4to, orig. purple velvet, contemporary Manuscript on paper, neatly written on 53 pages,
20 long lines to a page. Includes 5-page Dedication to the King (Charles I.) in which he is
favourably compared with the late Prince his brother. This apparently was never printed,
for in the first ed. (1641, see next item) a shorter dedic. to Prince Charles (II.) was substituted
by J. B. (the publisher). The present dedication is signed “ Cha. Cornwaleys,” to all ap-
pearance in the author’s autograph, differing somewhat in style from the body of the MS.
It is to be noted that the Scribe was probably instructed to leave a 3-line space for the heading
to the dedication, which has been filled in by the same hand as the signature, viz. “ To the
kinges most excllt. Matie. my most gratious Soueraigne Lord.” With this in mind the whole
MS. has the appearance of being the original presentation copy to the King.
