2 July - Józef Lepkowski’s post-doctoral dissertation
(habilitation) on archaeology and mediaeval art, as
applied to Slavic and Polish historical monuments,
was approved.
October - As a private associate professor (Privatdozent),
Józef Łepkowski commenced lecturing on the
Archaeology of Mediaeval An.
1866
October - Józef Łepkowski was nominated and appoint-
ed associate professor.
1867
5 March - A Section of Art History was created within
the Chair of Archaeology.
1873
11 June - At its first session, the Commission on Art
History at the Academy of Arts and Sciences
decided to invite, among others, Marian Sokołow-
ski, to join its membership.
1878
July - Marian Sokołowski obtained his doctorate under
the supervision of Łepkowski and Józef Szujski.
10 December - Sokołowski passed his post-doctoral
exam (habilitation).
1879
18 March - Sokołowski obtained veniam legendi [the
right to lecture] in the field of art history and
archaeology.
October - As a private associate professor, Sokołowski
commenced his university lectures on the history of
Renaissance art in Italy.
1880
24 November - Sokołowski submitted a request to the
Philological Faculty to apply on his behalf for
a ministry subsidy which would enable him to
purchase the necessary books and photographs and
grant him permission to conduct practical classes in
his own apartment (in Wielopole St.).
1881
The “scientific apparatus” purchased by Sokołowski, as
well as the plaster casts donated by Karol
Lanckoroński initiated the library collection of the
Section of Art History, initially housed at the
Collegium Minus of the University.
1882
7 February - Sokołowski was appointed professor
extraordinarius of art history as of 1 September. At

the Jagiellonian University the first Chair of Art
History on Polish territories was created. Archaeo-
logy and art history were assigned to the Philoso-
phical Faculty and placed directly after history as
her auxiliary disciplines.
1884
The formally founded Section of Art History continued
to be based in Sokolowski’s apartment. He became
a full member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences.
1885
The Section of Art History obtained two small rooms in
the chemistry building, “next to the Plantations”
(currently the Wróblewski College at No 2 K. Ol-
szewski St.).
1887
December - An academic “Aestheticians’ Circle” was
created whose president was Władysław Krukowski,
whereas Stanisław Wyspiański held the post of its
secretary. Sokołowski supervised the activity of the
Circle.
The Sections of Art History and Archaeology were
transferred to Collegium Novum.
1888
23 May - Marian Sokołowski was appointed professor
ordinańus as of 1 January 1889.
1890
Sokołowski obtained permission of the University Senate
to convert one of the lecture rooms into a museum,
so as to accommodate the collections of the Section
of Art History (chiefly the casts).
1892
14 January - Sokołowski became chairman of the
Commission on Art History of the Academy of Arts
and Sciences.
1893
30 October - Due to Lepkowski’s illness, Sokołowski
took over supervision of the Section of Archaeology.
1893/94
Feliks Kopera, as a bursary holder, fulfilled the function
of demonstrator and organizer of the collections of
the Sections of Art History and Archaeology up to
the year 1896.
1895
21 March - Private associate professor of history, Dr
Jerzy Mycielski obtained an extension of veniam
legendi to include art history.
