art history. Following the ministry ruling, the
Professors’ Council of the Philosophical Faculty
introduced a division of the Combined Collections
of Art and Archaeology into four newly-created
units: the Department of Art History (head:
Mycielski), the Museum of Art and Archaeology
(Pagaczewski), the Section and Seminar of Classical
Archaeology and the Department of Prehistoric
Archaeology.
8 June - Adam Bochnak was nominated assistant in the
Department of Art History.
1921/22
The disciplines taught at the Philosophical Faculty were
divided into humanistic and mathematical-natural
ones. History of art was classified as belonging to
the former and it comprised classical archaeology,
the fine arts and music.
1922
24 June - Adam Bochnak obtained the degree of doctor
of philosophy under the supervision of Prof.
Pagaczewski.
1923
4 May - Tadeusz Dobrowolski obtained the degree of doctor
of philosophy under the supervision of Prof. Mycielski.
1 October - Zbigniew Bocheński became assistant in the
Museum of Art (until 31 May 1929).
1923/24
It was decided that art history would be subdivided
within the Philosophical Faculty into: the fine arts
(including classical archaeology) and the history and
theory of music.
1925
8 October - Professor Wojsław Mole became head of the
Chair of Art History of the Slavic Nations.
16 October - Adam Bochnak obtained postdoctoral
degree in the field of art history of the Christian
nations (approved by the Ministry of Religious
Denominations and Public Enlightenment on 10
November).
1925/26
Master degrees were introduced at the Philosophical
Faculty.
1926
30 March - The Minister of Education consented that
the seventy-year-old Prof. Mycielski should remain
head of the Department until the end of the
academic year 1930/31 as full professor.
16 November - Wojsław Mole obtained his nomination
to full professor.
1928
26 September - Death of Jerzy Mycielski.
13 December - It was decided that following the death of
Jerzy Mycielski, the post of head of the Department of
Art History should be entrusted to Pagaczewski, until
proper elections. In accordance with Pagaczewski’s
suggestion, it was decided that the prints and drawings
which Mycielski left in his will should not be entered
into the inventory of the Department, but rather into
the inventory of the Museum of Art.
1929
23 January - The motion to nominate Mole to the Chair,
following the death of Mycielski, was overruled
unanimously.
1 June - Jerzy Szabłowski became assistant in the Museum
of Art. He held this post until 30 September 1930.
22 June - Szydłowski was nominated associate professor
of art history.
1 August - Szydłowski was appointed to the Chair and to
the post of Head of the Department which was
associated with it.
1930
3 March - At the request of Szydłowski and Pagaczewski,
the Council of the Philosophical Faculty applied to
the Ministry of Education for permission to
purchase two slide projectors.
1931
25 June - Jerzy Szabłowski obtained the degree of doctor
of philosophy.
1932
22 March - Karol Estreicher (junior assistant in the
Department of Art History since 1 December 1928)
obtained the degree of doctor of philosophy.
1933
27 April - Pagaczewski became chairman of the
Commission on Art History at the Polish Academy
of Arts and Sciences.
4-7 September - Szydłowski participated in
the XIII International Congress of Art History in
Stockholm and delivered a paper entitled L’autel de
Guy Stoss a I’eglise de Notre Dame a Cracovie et la
decouverte de sa polychromie originale.
30 September - Pagaczewski was suspended whereas the
Chair and Department of Art History which had been
headed by him were closed down. The above
repression was the result of Pagaczewski’s involvement
in the defence of university autonomy during a debate
on the new act on higher schools of learning.
23 November - Prof. Jan Nowak, the Dean of the
Philosophical Faculty ordered Szydłowski to take
over from Pagaczewski all the materials and assets
of the liquidated department.

of the Philosophical Faculty, professors Semkowicz,
