Bochnak was nominated director of the Museum,
whereas Estreicher - his deputy.
June-August - Ass. Prof. Dr. J. Szabłowski, Dr. A. Misiąg-
Bocheńska, Dr. Z. Bocheński, Dr. B. Daszyńska, as
well as students: Lech Kalinowski, Juliusz Ross and
janitors: Jan and Antoni Torba and Boryński sorted
out and catalogued the university books which were
repossessed from Germany. Among them, there were
many which constituted a part of the pre-war book
collection belonging to the Department of Art
History that was recovered by Estreicher in the Zandt
castle (Bavaria), where the materials of the Institut
fur Deutsche Ostarbeit were stored.
1948
20 January - The Museum of the Jagiellonian University
headed by A. Bochnak received four rooms in
Collegium Maius.
21 May - The Senate Museum commission postulated
that the buildings housing Collegium Maius and the
Nowodworski College should be turned over to the
Museum of the Jagiellonian University, the
Archives of the Jagiellonian University as well as the
Departments of Art History, Classical Archaeology
and Art History of the Slavic Nations. A. Bochnak
became responsible for both buildings.
1 September - On the basis of a resolution of the Council
of the Faculty of Humanities of 30 October, Dr.
Maria Grodzicka became a volunteer assistant in
the Department of Art History. She held this post
until 31 August 1949.
1949
28 January - In response to the letter of the Ministry of
Education of 17 January, the Faculty Council
decided to nominate T. Dobrowolski associate
professor at the newly-created Chair of History and
Theory of Art.
28 February - The Ministry created the Chair of History
and Theory of Art together with the Department
which was associated with it; the Chair was
entrusted to T. Dobrowolski.
12 July - Jerzy Zarnecki, a research worker in the Library
of the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and
former junior assistant in the Department of Art
History, donated 17 boxes of photographs of
European art monuments to the Department.
1 September - A Seminar of History and Theory of Art
commenced its activity under the supervision of
Prof. Dobrowolski. Wanda Altendorf became junior
assistant in the Seminar.
1 September - Lech Kalinowski M.A., the former
volunteer assistant, became junior contractual
assistant, in place of Dr. B. Daszyńska.
1 October - Following the transfer of the Nowodworski
College to the Medical Academy (only a single lec-
ture room remained at the disposal of the
University), it was decided that the Department of
Art History, likewise the remaining university
departments, should be moved at the expense of the
Medical Academy.
8 November - An Academic Circle of Art Historians and
Historians Specializing in Prehistory was created.
21 November - At the very first meeting of the
Committee for the Restoration of Collegium Maius,
attended by Prof. Bochnak, Ass. Prof. Estreicher,
Ass. Prof. Szabłowski and Dr. Józef E. Dutkiewicz,
it was decided that the Museum of the Jagiellonian
University and the Department of Art History
should be housed in the Collegium Maius building.
17 December - Lech Kalinowski obtained the degree of
doctor of philosophy.
1950
1 February - The Department could for the first time
employ a full-time laboratory technician-photo-
grapher; the post was granted to Władysław
Gumuła.
21 February - At the fourth session of the Committee for
the Restoration of Collegium Maius, it was decided
that the second floor in the southern wing of the
building should be handed over to the Department
of Art History; it was also decided that at a later
date, the Department should also take over the
rooms in the eastern wing of the building.
13 March - The Department was transferred from the
Nowodworski College to Collegium Maius and it
consisted of three reading-rooms as well as
a professors’ room, an assistants’ room and a lecture
hall seating 90.
1 September - In connection with the fact that as many
as 120 students were accepted to the first year of
studies, the auxiliary personnel of the Department
had to be increased. Julisz Ross M.A., formerly an
assistant in the Department of Classical Archae-
ology, became a junior contractual assistant. Dr.
Kalinowski was transferred to the post of senior
assistant.
1 November - Józef Lepiarczyk M.A. obtained the post
of senior assistant.
November - Completion of the adaptation and
renovation work in the rooms belonging to the
Department. In the effect of the renovation, the
Department consisted of a lecture room, a library
with reading room, a professor’s room, an assistants’
room, laboratory technicians’ room, a photo-
graphers’ darkroom and a hall.
1950/51
In the course of the reorganization of university
institutes and chairs which was being implemented
by the Ministry since 8 March 1950, the Chair of Art
History of the Slavic Nations, including the
department, was incorporated into the Historical
Faculty. Up until then, the duties of junior assistants
of the Seminar were fulfilled by: Anna Kowalska
(15 July-30 Nov. 1945); Maria Kaczanowska (1 Dec.
1945-31 Aug. 1946); Izabella Dubikówna (1 Sept.
