19 April-25 May - On the occasion of the 500th
anniversary of Veit Stoss’ arrival in Cracow, the
Institute of Art History and the National Museum
of Cracow organized a series of lectures delivered,
among others, by L. Kalinowski, J. Lepiarczyk and J.
Gadomski.
June - Within the inter-departmental project
(MR. III. 5): “Monuments of Culture as a Source of
National Awareness”, research work was initiated
under the supervision of Prof. Kalinowski.
7 July - Lech Kalinowski obtained the title of full
professor and was promoted to the post of full
professor in the Institute as of 1 August.
1 October - Dr. Ewa Chojecka moved to the Silesian
University in Katowice.
3-14 October - Prof. Jerzy Zarnecki from the Courtauld
Institute of Art at the London University delivered
a series of lectures and seminars devoted to
Romanesque sculpture.
1 November - T. Witkowska-Zychiewicz M.A. became head
of the library in which the following persons were
employed as librarians: Halina Pasek M.A. (16
Aug. 1976-30 Apr. 1978), Arch. Eng. Tomasz Węcła-
wowicz (26 May 1978-14 March 1979) and Aleksander
Siemaszko (junior librarian from 15 March 1979 who
was promoted to the post of librarian on 1 Aug. 1982).
Franciszek Wojtowicz who at that time was employed
as library keeper was subsequently promoted on 1
Jan. 1979 to the post of librarian conservator.
1978
1 February - Ass. Prof. A. Malkiewicz obtained the post
of deputy director of the Institute which he held
until the 31 January 1979.
25 April - The Director of the Institute requested the
Rector of the University to create a Department of
the History of Old Art. Prof. Dr. L. Kalinowski
became Head of the Department, whereas the
following scholars became its members: Ass. Prof.
Dr. K. Żurowska, Ass. Prof. J. Lepiarczyk, adjunct
professors: Dr. A. Małkiewicz, Dr. J. Gadomski, Dr.
J. K. Ostrowski and probationary assistant Barbara
Szyper M.A. The other new unit was the Depart-
ment of Modern Art History. Prof. Dr. M. Porębski
was appointed Head of this Department, while the
following research workers became its members:
senior lecturer Dr. W. Altendorf, adjunct professor
Dr. P. Krakowski, senior assistant M. Hussakowska-
Szyszko M.A. and assistant T. Gryglewicz.
30 September - W. Altendorf went into partial retire-
ment (she still worked half-time retaining a half of
the total workload). Marta Giżyńska-Matecka be-
came head of the photo-library.
1 October - Dr Anna Różycka Bryzek was promoted to
the post of adjunct professor.
15 October - Kazimierz Mróz became employed in the
Institute photo laboratory.
1979
3 January - Rector of the Jagiellonian University created
the Department of Old Art History and the
Department of Modern Art History.
14 February - Dr. Małkiewicz was appointed special
Rector’s plenipotentiary for the renovation,
conservation and future use of the Collegium
Iuridicum building - the present-day seat of the
Institute of Art History (since 1992).
1 April - Dr. A. Malkiewicz was promoted to the post of
associate professor. T. Węcławowicz M.A. became
employed in place of B. Szyper and received 3/4 of
the workload. B. Szyper was transferred to the
National Museum.
5 May - Mieczysław Porębski obtained a nomination to
the post of full professor.
10-18 September - At the XXIV International Congress
of Art History in Bologna, Dr. J. K. Ostrowski
delivered a paper entitled La Place Royale de Nancy:
remarques sur la genese de Varchitecture et les
contenus symboliques.
1 October - In accordance with the Rector’s nomination
of 15 September 1979, Dr. Małkiewicz took over as
director of the Institute (he held this post for two
consecutive terms of office until 31 August 1984),
and professors L. Kalinowski and M. Porębski
obtained the posts of heads of Departments.
6 December - On the strength of a resolution passed
by the Council of the Philosophical-Historical
Faculty, Piotr Krakowski received a postdoctoral
degree in humanities, on the basis of a dissertation
entitled Teoretyczne podstawy architektury wieku
XIX [The Theoretical Foundations of the 19th-c.
Architecture],

14-16 April - Within a social initiative organized in
support of the renovation of Cracow, the Institute
launched an academic session entitled Rewalory-
zacja: Historia - Teoria - Metodologia [Restoration:
History - Theory - Methodology],
24 April - Following the resolution of the Council of the
Philosophical-Historical Faculty, Jerzy Gadomski
obtained postdoctoral degree in the field of mediaeval
art history, on the basis of a dissertation entitled
Gotyckie malarstwo tablicowe Małopolski 1420-1470
[Gothic Panel Painting in Lesser Poland 1420-1470].
30 June - Maria Hussakowska obtained a doctor’s
degree in humanities; she was promoted to the post
of adjunct on 1 October 1980.
14-15 December - On the occasion of Prof. Kalinowski’s
sixtieth birthday, the Institute organized an
academic session Historia sztuki - jej miejsce, metody
i praktyka badawcza [Art History - Its Place,
Methods and Research Practice].

12 June - The celebrations of Prof. M. Porębski’s sixtieth
birthday were held in the Gallery of Polish Painting
