I SHOULD not attempt to write a pre-
face to the sollowing Translation, were it
not to apologize for so arduous an under-
taking, which I am truly sensible required
a man of great talents and no inferior eru-
dition; but the love I have sor the Author,
both as a writer and an artist, made me
hazard this feeble eXposition os his abili-
ties, in hopes of being os service to young
Students who cannot read his works in the
languages of the original publications, and
with the desire os giving pleasure to others
who for mere amusement may peruse this
Translation, wnich certainly will contain
matter truly interesting either to the Li-
terati, the Artist, or the Amateur.
Mengs, as an Author, is justly admired
by all thole who have read his works in
the languages in which they have been
published,namely,in the Spanish and Italian,
by the same Editor, the Chevalier uon
