RAPHAEL MENGS.

147

PART THE SECOND.

OF THE PARTS OF PAINTING, AND OF
THE PERFECTIONS AND DEFECTS OF
RAPHAEL.

CH A P.

I.

OF DESIGN.
RAPHAEL began with a Design dry and
servile, although sufficiently correst. He
then learned a superior style, yet never so per-
fect, and competent as that of the ancients of
the first degree, because he had not on the whole
that knowledge oftrue Beauty which the Greeks
possessed. He was excellent in the characters
of Philosophers, Apostles, and in other figures of
that kind. His women are not sufficiently
graceful, and he spoilt them by his convex turns,
which render them in a certain manner trivial,
and of a vulgar air; and when he wished to
avoid that error, he fell into another, still
Worse, which was harshness.
