INTRODUCTION.
Raphael is undoubtedly the first among
the greatest Painters, not for being more
rich than the others in possessing a greater quan-
tity of perfect parts in his profession, but for
having the quality most important ; because
Painting being composed os Design, Clare Ob-
scure, Colouring, Imitation, Composition, and
Invention ; it is certain, that Raphael possessed
the Art of Designing and Composition in a high
degree, as well as sufficient invention : In the
mean time, Correggio remained excellent in Clare
