THE AUTHOR TO THE READER^
THIS Treatise, in the beginning, was written
principally for my own use, and with the
desire only of retracing in it some ufeful truths.
When it was almost finished I was desired by an
Academy in Germany to give it to them, which,
however, was impeded by various accidents.
This Academy was however dissolved, and my
Treatise remained with me; Some time after,
when I casually perused it, I was not content
with the whole, and purposed to write it anew,
leaving out some things, and adding many
others; but, considering what time and fatigue
it required, and knowing myself incapable of
ornamenting my sentiments and ideas with a
