195 W^ WORKS BY
seen at Venice, and among other painting
there is a beautisul Venus in the house of Grassi,
designed and painted in his beft time; but his
best painting is Saint Peter the Martyr, in
which he shows great design and colouring, and
appears there to have surpassed himself. All
his parts are studied from nature, without the
appearance of the art with which they are
done ; and they are painted with such boldness,
that they appear as done from idea.
In general Titian did not finish much his
paintings. But with the little he did, he expressed
as much as Correggio with all his attention and
fatigue. In the last, however, all is as reason,
and in the first excellent imitation of nature.
His drapery is light, and it has also the Ideal ;
but partakes of minutiae and triteness. His
sields are the moft beautiful that I know ; but
the part in which he is so eminently su-
perior is, in colouring, and in certain bold
sirokes, which would be useful to augment the
beauty of Correggio. Lastly, no one has
known so well as him how to use the halfTint of
- blood colour which has an effect as beautiful as
Nature.
